BFI Film Academy Short Courses Delivered by ACT 2 CAM


Do you have a passion or talent for filmmaking and an ambition to work in the film industry?



The BFI Film Academy helps train and inspire the next generation of UK filmmakers, supporting young people aged 16 to 19 to develop the commercial and cultural knowledge and skills to help make a career in film.

Fully supported by industry professionals, this is your chance to get involved with the UK's most prestigious filmmaking programme for young people.


During the course you will learn from professional filmmakers, watch and analyse world cinema and be supported to create your own film, working as part of a production team!


There are 20 places available. Short courses cost £25, but if you are unable to pay the fee don’t let this discourage you from applying. Contact the course provider, as costs may be waived. Bursaries for travel and childcare are also available if you require assistance with these costs.




Course Outline

This programme will give you the chance to produce your own short film, developing film theory and specialist production skills. Fully supported by industry professionals, this is your chance to get involved with the UK's most prestigious filmmaking programme for young people.

  • Meet film professionals, such as Directors, Writers & Producers.

  • Link in with organisations such as BAFTA and the BFI.

  • Develop your filmmaking skills by making a short film with the support of industry professionals.

  • Opportunity to apply for National Residential Academies in Documentary, Animation, Visual Effects & BAFTA mentoring, which are only available to BFI Alumni, at the National Film School.

During the course you will learn from professional filmmakers, watch and analyse world cinema and be supported to create your own film, working as part of a production team!

Qualifications

Participants in the BFI Film Academy Short Course will have the chance to gain a recognised arts qualification along with valuable 21st century skills.

Silver Arts Award gives young people the chance to take on an artistic challenge and a leadership role too. As well as being about creativity, it's about becoming a reviewer, researcher and project manager. Participants build a broad range of transferable skills as they complete their portfolio and work towards a Level 2 qualification.

Eligibility for short courses

In order to apply you must:

  • be aged 16 to 19-years-old on the first day of the course

  • be a UK resident

  • have a passion or talent for filmmaking and an ambition to work in the film industry

  • be able to commit to the duration of the course

  • not currently be at university or enrolled at university when the course starts

  • not have previously enrolled on a BFI Film Academy course

As each course is likely to have more people apply than available places, any evidence you have of your passion or talent will help your application. Every course is open to young people from anywhere in the UK and from any background. No academic education or degree is necessary.

Course details:

The 60 hour course will run on Saturdays between the 11th November 2023 - 10th February 2024. All sessions will be in person, at The Big Local, Whitley Bay, NE26 2LY, where we have great access to parking and transport links.

    December 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd

    January 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th

    February 3rd, 10th
